William Mathew Butler (1863 – 19 March 1922)
William was the eldest son of William and Martha (née Piddock) Butler was baptised on 27 September 1863 at St. Paul’s Church. He grew at at 17 George Street and his father worked as an engine fitter for Great Eastern Railway . He married Elizabeth in 1881 and the couple had two children: Elizabeth and Emma Martha (1889-1961). William worked as an engine driver and the family lived at 4 Sleaford Street (1901) and then 102 Gwydir Street (1911) and 115 Gwydir Street. He died at home aged 58 years.
Elizabeth Butler (née Ambrose) (23 January 1863 – 18 July 1942)
Elizabeth was born in Buntingford, Hertfordshire and married William Butler when she was 18 years old. After she was widowed she continued to live at 115 Gwydir Street and in 1939 was living there with her grandson William Ernest Barham, his wife and five children. She was described on the records as a retired college bedmaker, although no previous census documents had recorded her as working. She died at 115 Gwydir Street in 1942.
Elizabeth Barham (née Butler) (22 January 1882 – 28 March 1951)
Elizabeth was William and Elizabeth’s eldest daughter and by the age of 19 was working as a dressmaker. She married George William Barham (1878-1945) in 1902 and they had at least ten children: William Ernest George (1902-1974), Neville Alfred Leonard (1904-1974), Doris Valentine Emily Elizabeth (1906-1966), Leslie Maurice Gordon (1907-1970), Margaret Ann Rosalie Charlotte (1909-1983), Clifford Edward Thomas (1911-1981), Ethel Florence Maud (1914-1993), Ivy Frances Isobel May (1917-2003), Clarence Ronald Montague (1920-1996) and Pearl Trixie K (1921-2006). William worked as a pit cleaner (1911) on the railway, but by 1939 was unable to work through illness. The family lived at 29 Wellington Street (1911) and then 54 Norfolk Street (at least 1920 onwards). She was widowed in 1945 and died aged 69 years.
Francis (Frank) Chamberlain (8 July 1890 – 15 February 1944)
Frank was born in Great Eversden and was the son of John and Sarah. John Chamberlain worked as a farm horse keeper and Frank grew up at 4 Swan’s Yard, Trumpington. Aged 21 he was working as a domestic gardener and later worked as a fitter’s mate . He married Emma Martha Harriet Butler (1888-1961) in 1922 and they lived at 28 Oak Tree Avenue, Chesterton.
George William Barham (23 June 1878 – 10 December 1945)
George was the son of William and Rosa (née Frost) was baptised in Thurton, near Lodden Norfolk on 2 May 1879. William Barham was an agricultural labourer and the family had moved to live at Newmarket Road by 1891. George was lodging at Sleaford Street with William and Elizabeth Butler in 1901 and working as an apprentice barber. He married their daughter Elizabeth (1882-1951) in 1902 they had at least ten children: William Ernest George (1902-1974), Neville Alfred Leonard (1904-1974), Doris Valentine Emily Elizabeth (1906-1966), Leslie Maurice Gordon (1907-1970), Margaret Ann Rosalie Charlotte (1909-1983), Clifford Edward Thomas (1911-1981), Ethel Florence Maud (1914-1993), Ivy Frances Isobel May (1917-2003), Clarence Ronald Montague (1920-1996) and Pearl Trixie K (1921-2006). William worked as a pit cleaner (1911) on the railway, but by 1939 was unable to work through illness. The family lived at 29 Wellington Street (1911) and then 54 Norfolk Street (at least 1920 onwards). He died at home after a long illness and was buried five days later.
