George Robert Barnes (29 July 1851 – 2 September 1914)

George was born in Poole and baptised there on 14 July 1858.  He was the youngest son of Thomas and Susannah (née Smartfield) and brother of Tom.   His father was a cordwainer/shoe maker and he grew up at Strand Street, Poole. George trained as a baker and by 1881 had moved to live at 22 Sidney Street where he was employing one man and one boy in his business.  His brother Tom, sister in law Eliza and mother were also living with him in 1881. George married Sarah Elizabeth Hatt (1840-1926) in 1884. The couple lived at Newnham Villa, Barton Road, which was Sarah’s family home and in 1891 he was described as a baker/confectioner. He died at Sidney Street aged 63 years old.

His widow Sarah died at Newnham Villa in August 1926 and is buried with her parents at Mill Road Cemetery.
