Eliza Baseley (née Bentley) (1865 – 9 December 1926)
Eliza was born in Nuthampstead, a village just south of Royston and was the daughter of agricultural labourer Robert and Mary Ann (née Harvey). She grew up on The Green and aged 16 was an unemployed domestic servant. Eliza married George Martin (1855-1904) on 8 March 1888 in Barkway (another village just south of Royston) and the couple had at least six children: Daisy Elizabeth (1889-1974), Henry William (Harry) (1890-), Edward Charles (1892-), Ivy Violet (1893-1978), Beatrice Maud (1896-1962) and Dick (1898-1917). George Martin was a publican/hurdlemaker and in 1901 the family were living at the Woodman pub in Barkway.
Eliza was widowed in 1904 and then married William Charles Baseley (1880-1951) in Bishops Stortford in 1905. They had a daughter together Dorothy Mary (1905-1991) and lived at 15 Princes Street. William was a fish porter for a fish merchant and Eliza died ‘after a long and painful illness’. Her funeral was held on 13 December.
William Baseley married widow Rose May Chambers (née Howard) (1886-1960) in 1939 and died in Wimbish, near Saffron Walden.
Private Dick Martin, Eliza and George’s youngest child was killed in the 1st World War. He was a private with the 4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, went missing on 6 October 1917 and was presumed dead.
