Walter Jarman Beates (29 April 1862 – 30 December 1943)

Walter was born in Oxford, the son of stone carver Benjamin (1829-1874) and Martha (née Jarman) (1826-1881). He was baptised at St. Gabriel’s Church, Pimlico on 16 September 1868 when he was six years old, when his parents had Walter and his three siblings baptised on the same day. He grew up in Birxton and married Caroline Gadd on Christmas Day 1886 at St. John’s Church, Walworth. Walter worked as a plasterer and the couple had two children: Walter (1889-) and Alice Kate (1891-1964). Both children where born in Cambridge, and the family lived at 52 Norfolk Street (1891) and then 5 Edward Street (at least 1901 onwards). By 1939 he had retired from work and was living at home with Caroline and daughter Alice. He died at home aged 81 years old.

Ellen Caroline Beates (née Gadd) (5 April 1863 – 29 March 1949)

Known as Caroline, she was baptised Ellen Clara Beates at St. Matthew’s Church, Brixton on 31 May 1863. Caroline was the daughter of Joseph and Caroline Gadd and grew up at Cumberland Place, Brixton. Her father was a plumber/glazier and her mother was a ‘mangler’ (laundress). She died at 5 Edward Street.

Alice Kate Beates (28 February 1891 – 7 April 1964)

Alice worked as a dressmaker and lived with her parents at Edward Street until their deaths. She died at the house she had lived in for over 60 years, aged 73 years old.

Elizabeth and Emma Jarman, were Walter Beates’ maternal aunts.

Elizabeth Jarman (c.1827 –  12 November 1906)

Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Sarah Jarman and was born in Ely.  She was baptised there on 31 October 1827. She lived with her sister Emma on the High Street in Ely, where they worked as milliners/straw bonnet makers (1871/1881). They sold their business in April 1884 advertising it in local newspapers as: ‘To Milliners and Others. To be disposed of, an old-established business, in High Street, Ely, for many years successfully conducted by two ladies’. It is thought that the sisters later moved to Cambridge, and Elizabeth died at 107 Newmarket Road.

Emma Jarman (1829 –  14 September 1910)

Emma was also born in Ely and died at 2 Brunswick Terrace.
