In Loving Memory of CHARLES BENTON who died [19] Feb 1917 aged 72 years
Also MARTHA his wife d 11th Feb 1923 aged 80 years
Charles Benton (1844 – 19 February 1917)
Charles was born in Grantchester and baptised there on 16 June 1844. He was the son of carpenter Joseph Benton and his wife Amelia and by the age of 16 Charles was working also as a carpenter. He married Martha Moore in 1865, and the couple had ten children: Herbert Charles (1866-1953), Amelia Alice (1868-1936), Joseph (1870-1948), Arthur Thomas (1872-1889), Florence Mary (1874-1965), Ada Elizabeth (1877-1938), Beatrice (1879-1883), Bertie William (1885-1922) and a further two children who died as infants.
Charles continued to work as a carpenter/joiner and the family lived at 14 George IVth Street (1881) and 4 Catharine Street (1891). In 1901 Charles, Martha and youngest son Bertie were living in Arundel, Sussex. By 1911 they had returned to live at 11 Catharine Street and Charles died there aged 72 years old.
Martha Benton (née Moore) (1842 – 11 February 1923)
Martha was born in Cottenham and was the daughter of William and Mary Moore. Her father worked as an agricultural labourer, and by the age of 19 (1861) Martha was working as a servant, but still living at home. She married Charles Benton when she was 23 years old. Martha died at 11 Catharine Street aged 80 years old.
