Charles Bidwell (1863 – 17 January 1939)

Charles was baptised at the Primitive Methodist Chapel on 30 August 1863 and was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth.  Thomas Bidwell was a butcher and he grew up at 105 East Road. Aged 18 Charles was also a butcher and married Emily Kirkup in 1894. The couple lived at 37 Herbert Street (1901), 69a St. Andrew Street (1911) and 10 Tennis Court Road. Charles worked at Trinity Hall, but on census records was noted as a butcher whilst Emily ran a Lodging House from home (1911 onwards).  He died at Tennis Court Road and his funeral took place on 21 January. Emily was unable to attend the funeral due to ‘indispoisition’, but the University Vice Chancellor was at the funeral as were several University professors. Wreaths were sent from ‘the Master and Fellows of Trinity Hall’ and ‘fellow servants of Trinity Hall’.

Charles’ half siblings  Thomas Richard Thurlow Bidwell (1848-1900) and Hannah Thurlow Shoote (1850-1926) are also buried at Mill Road Cemetery

Emily Ann Bidwell (née Kirkup) (6 December 1860 – 10 September 1943)

Emily was the daughter of shoemaker William Kirkup and Jane (née Lockwood). She grew up at 4 White’s Court (1861/1871) and then Princes Street (1881/1891) and worked as a dressmaker before marrying Charles Bidwell.  In 1939 she was still running a Lodging House from Tennis Court Road and died at home aged 82 years old.
