Monument

This set of kerb stones, located in the parish area of St Mary the Great, stand 1 row east of the east path in the centre of the parish strip. Lydia’s inscription is carved but Charle’s inscription is of metal letters. The kerb against the path has fallen monument and the  flower holder is now covered in grass.

LYDIA wife of Charles Brand died Aug 28 1942 aged 80 years. 

CHARLES BRAND died May 21st 1948 aged 82 years

Lydia Brand (née Ashberry) (26 January 1862 – August 1942)

Lydia was the daughter of John and Elizabeth  (née Mansfield) and was baptised on 23 August 1863 in Chesterton. John Ashberry was a boatwright who died in 1863 when Lydia was one. In 1881 Lydia was working as a housemaid for Lawrance and Agnes Headly at 1 Camden Place and married Charles Brand on 5 April 1890 at Chesterton Church.  Charles worked as a printers warehouseman and they had three children: Winifred Mary (1891-1963), Charles Frank (1894-1972) and Dorothy (1899-1981). The family lived at 19 Cross Street before moving to 36 Mawson Road (c.1922 onwards). Lydia died aged 80 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 1 September 1942.

Charles Brand (27 May 1865 – 21 May 1948)

Charles was also born in Chesterton and was the son of George and Harriett. He grew up at Water Street in Chesterton with his six siblings and his father was a labourer.  Charles died at Mawson Road aged 82 years old.
