William was the son of William and Frances Brignell. He was baptised in Ickleton on 25th July 1858. He grew up on Eden Street [1861] and then Ainsworth Street [1871]. His father was a college cook at St John’s College. William’s father died in 1874 aged 41 years old. In 1881 he was living at 15 Custom Street with his mother Frances – she was working as a charwoman and William as a labourer.
He married Emily Harvey in 1894 and they lived at 7 Thoday Street [1901] and later at 107 Cavendish Road. William worked as a head signal fitter on the railway throughout his married life.
He died in November 1940 aged 82 years old.
Emily Adelaide Brignell [nee Harvey] (11 June 1868 – 15 February 1953)
Emily was born in Cambridge, and was the daughter of George and Sarah Harvey. George Harvey was a cricketer and she grew up initially at the Suffolk Hotel on Grafton Street [1871] and then 10 Elm Street [1881]. What form of professional cricketer George Harvey was is under debate – more can be read here.
Emily married William Brignell in 1894 aged 27 years old. They had one daughter – Emily Adelaide Drusilla. After being widowed she continued to live at 107 Cavendish Road with her daughter. She died there in 1953 aged 84 years old.
Emily Adelaide Drusilla Brignell (18 November 1896 – 23 June 1978)
Emily was the only daughter of Emily and William Brignell. She lived with her mother until her death and was still recorded as living at 107 Cavendish Road in 1955. She died in Hythe in Kent in 1978 aged 81 years old.
