Ellen Burling (née Hill) (20 February 1857 – 15 December 1923)
Ellen was born in Linton, the daughter of Charles and Ann (née Burdett). She grew up at Recreation Lane, Linton and her father worked as a labourer. Aged 23 (1881) Ellen was working as a domestic servant at Elfreda House, Newmarket Road. She married James Burling on 15 June 1882 in Linton and they had four children: Arthur Edward (1882-1964), Charles James (1884-1968), Amelia (1886-1970) and Percy (1895-1959). Charles was a railway worker and the family lived at Catherine Street . Ellen died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and her funeral took place on 19 December. Her age was recorded as 65 years old, but this age is inconsistent with information on documentation through her life.
James Burling (3 February 1861 – 1 September 1947)
James was born in Bottisham, the son of Edward and Susannah. His father was an agricultural labourer and he grew up in Bottisham (1861) and Fen Ditton (1871/1881). In 1881 James was also working as an agricultural labourer and still living at home. He later worked as a railway fireman (1891) and then an engine driver (at least 1901 onwards). After he was widowed he married Sylvester Nichols (1878-1966) in 1926. By 1939 he had retired, and was living with at 35 Catherine Street with Sylvester. He died at home aged 86 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 4 September 1947.
