James Butcher (1843 – 7 January 1918)

James was born in Mildenhall, Suffolk and was the son of Samuel and Hannah Butcher.  He grew up in Worlington, just outside Mildenhall where his father ran an inn (1851) but later became a carpenter (1861).  By the time he was 17 James was also working as a carpenter.  He married Adelaide Pike in 1873.  The couple had six children: Arthur Samuel (1874 – 1942), Kate Jessie (1875-1967), Emily (1877-), Adelaide (1879-1964), Florence Gertrude (1883-1974) and another child who died as an infant.

James continued to work as a carpenter/joiner and the family lived at 21 Burleigh Street (1881), 38 Newmarket Road (1891), 6 Abbey Walk (1901) and then 35 Kingston Street (1911). James was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 11 January 1918.

Adelaide Butcher (née Pike) (1849 – 28 April 1936)

Adelaide was the daughter of Stephen and Amy Pike.  She was born in Swaffham Prior, and grew up in Bottisham where her father farmed 50 acres.  She married James Butcher when she was 24 years.  After she was widowed she continued to live at 35 Kingston Street, and died aged 86 years old.
