Walter Charles Bynge (17 September 1871 – 22 April 1954)
Walter was born in Dry Drayton and was the son of Arthur and Martha Bynge. Aged 9 he was living with his parents and siblings at Farm Cottage in Grantchester, where Arthur Bynge was working as a domestic groom. Aged 19 he was still living with his parents at ‘In the Steep’ in Grantchester and was working as a groom like his father. He married Louisa Peters in Linton in 1897. They had two children: Arthur Leslie (1897-1918) and Constance Martha (1900-1991). The family were living at 1 Coronation Place, St Eligius Street in 1901 and Walter was to live there for the rest of his life.
He was a domestic coachman in 1901/1911, but in 1939 was working as a jobbing gardener. His only son Arthur Leslie was killed in the 1st World War, whilst serving as a private in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Walter and Louisa received a war gratuity in December 1919 of £8 and 10s as a result of his death. Arthur is buried in the Cambrin Cemetery in France.
After being widowed Walter lived with his daughter Constance and her husband Arthur Tucker at Coronation Street/St Eligius Street. He died in 1954 aged 82 years old.
Louisa Sarah Bynge (née Peters) (c.1873 – 12 January 1929)
Louisa was born in Mepal, a village between Ely and Chatteris in North East Cambridgeshire. Her parents were Zachariah and Eliza Peters, and Zachariah worked as a domestic groom. Aged 8 years old she was living in Hildersham with her parents and siblings. She married Walter Bygne in 1897, and died aged 55 years old.
