Monument

This broken cross stands roughly 8/9 rows east of the lodge and 2 rows north of the south path. Though usually hidden in bramble this picture was taken after some minor clearance. The inscription of metal letters is intact. It is possible that there is an inscription for Emma that we were unable to uncover. Part of the cross stands next to the plinth

Albert Chacksfield (1848 – 1 December 1923)

Born in Tenterden, Kent and baptised there on 14 May 1848, Albert was the son of Walter and Hannah. His father was a shepherd and in 1871 Albert was working as a school master in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire with his sister Ann Elizabeth Chacksfield. He married Catherine Wild (1852-1887) on 2 February 1872 in Mansfield and they had two children: Edgar (1872-1919) and Ethel (1873-1899). The family were living in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire in 1881 where Albert was the village schoolmaster.  They moved to live in Bishop’s Stortford and Albert became a corn merchant’s clerk.  Catherine Chacksfield died in 1887 in Bishop’s Stortford and Albert married Emma Wisbey (1857-1908) the following year.  They had one son: Bertram Maurice (1890-1919) and lived at Clifton Villas, Bishop’s Stortford (1891) and 37 Mawson Road, Cambridge (1896).

By 1901 they had moved to live at 7 Stoneleigh Terrace, 46 Blinco Grove. Emma Chacksfield died in 1908, and Albert married for a third time to Rebecca Woolby (1855-1915)  in 1910.  He was widowed for a third time in July 1915 and died at Blinco Grove aged 75 years old.  He had outlived his three wives, and three children.

Ethel Chacksfield (1873 – 29 September 1899)

Ethel died at Blinco Grove  aged 26 years old. Her funeral was held on 3 October.

From Parish burial records it is known that Albert’s second wife Emma is also buried in the same grave.

Emma Chacksfield (née Wisbey) (1857 –  December 1908)

Emma was born in Wenden Lofts, near Saffron Walden. She was the third daughter of Stephen and Harriett and grew up at Mill Cottage where her father was a journeyman miller (1861). Aged 24 Emma was living in Margate and was working as a mother’s help. She married widower Albert Chacksfield when she was 31 years old and they had one son. Emma died at Blinco Grove aged 51 years old, and her funeral was held on 5 December 1908.
