Barrett Christmas (1854 – 19 February 1915)

Barrett was born in Histon and baptised there on 17 December 1854. He was the son of Barrett and Hannah (née Skinner) and grew up on Broad Lane in Histon. His father was an agricultural labourer, and Barrett worked as the same before his marriage. He married Mary Ann Cowell on 9 October 1881 in Haydon, Essex and they went to live at the Leys School where Barrett was the caretaker of North House A (1891).  Mary’s brothers Charles and Dennis were also living at the Leys School in 1891 and working as a gardener and bootboy respectively. The couple later moved to live at  37 Norwich Street (1901)  and he continued to work at the Leys School. Barrett died at home aged 60 years old.

Mary Ann Christmas (née Cowell) (1857 – 21 August 1925)

Mary was born in Elmdon, near Saffron Walden and was the daughter of John and Martha.  She was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Heydon on 31 January 1858 and grew up on the Cambridge Road, Heydon where her father was a farm labourer. Mary worked as a general servant for bricklayer John Bennett at 102 Fitzroy Street, Cambridge  (1871) and then for brewer Arthur Hall at Fore Hill, Ely (1881) before marrying Barrett Christmas. She died at 37 Norwich Street aged 68 years old.
