Monument

This well preserved headstone, in the parish area of St Paul, is located on the east of the western path.

Inscription

‘In Loving Memory of William Cornell who peacefully passed away Feb 24 1900 aged 50 years.’

“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.”

‘Also Ann dearly loved wife of the above entered into rest  May 10 1936 aged 86 years’

“Blessed be his holy name.”

William Cornell (1849 – 24 February 1900)

William was the son of William and Louisa and was baptised in Cherry Hinton on 30 September 1849.  He grew up on Cherry Hinton High Street and his father was a labourer. Aged 11 William was working as the same. He married Ann Page in 1870 and they had nine children: Bertha Louisa (1871-1960), Alice Frances (1872-1956), Jane Ann (1874-1953), Sarah Elizabeth (1876-), William Charles (1877-1948), George Frederick (1879-1955), Albert (Bertie) (1880-1955), Rev. Sidney Frederick (Fred) (1882-1953) and Ellen Mary (1884-1953). William worked as a wine merchant’s porter/cellarman and the family lived at 2 Covent Garden (1871), South Street (1881/1891) and 268 Mill Road. He died at home aged 50 years old.

Ann Cornell (née Page) (1849 – 10 May 1936)

Ann was born in the village of All Saints and St Nicholas, South Elmham, five miles south of Bungay, Suffolk and baptised there on 10 November 1849.  She was the daughter of John and Mary Page, and her father was an agricultural labourer.  After she was widowed she kept ran a general  shop at 268 Mill Road (1901) and a Lodging House at 37 Trinity Street (1911). Ann died at 1 Willis Road and her funeral was held on 14 May.

Three years later her family placed an In Memoriam advert in the Cambridge Daily News which read ‘in ever loving remembrance of our dear mother, Ann, who passed on on May 9th 1936. Peace, sweet peace, that knows no ending – From the family’.
