Daniel Redhouse Cowell (1805 – 9 January 1887)

Daniel was the son of William and Rebecca and was born in Bumpstead, Essex. He was baptised at St. Andrew’s Church,  Helions Bumpstead on 30 May 1819 when he was c.13 years old.  He married Mary Whitby (1810-1844) on 28 April 1828 at the same church and the couple had at least five children: Sarah (1830-), Frederick (1832-1884), George Edward (1834-1874), William (1838-1887) and Daniel Redhouse (1840-1894).  All the children were born in Cambridge, so Daniel and Mary must have moved to the town shortly after marriage. Daniel worked as a shoemaker and in 1841 the family were living at 74, Cambridge Place.

He was widowed in 1844 and married Ann Jones in 1845 and they had at least seven children: Jane (1847-), Edward (1848-1885), Emily (1849-1929), Georgianna (1851-1872), Martha Kate (1853-1933), Ellen (1857-1931) and Elliott Peck (1859-1909).  They lived at 8 Gold Street (1851), 17 Burleigh Street (1861/1871) and 6 Victoria Street (1881). Daniel died at Victoria Street aged 81 years old.

Ann Cowell (née Jones) (1817 –  21 December 1892)

Ann was the daughter of Edward and Mary and was baptised in Norfolk on 27 April 1817. She was born and raised in Sedgeford, close to Hunstanton on the North Norfolk coast. After she was widowed she went to live at 15 Willis Road, where her daughter Ellen was the housekeeper for solicitor’s clerk Alfred Morrell (1891).  On the census of that year Ann is marked as as being a retired college servant.  She died aged 75 years old.
