Martha Cross (née Wilderspin) (1859 – 27 November 1898)
Martha was the youngest daughter of John and Elizabeth (née Bidwell) Wilderspin. She grew up on St. Peter’s Street, and her father was a bricklayer. Aged 22 she was lodging at 81 Wellington Street, Finsbury Park and working as a dressmaker. She married Walter Hawkes Cross (1863 – 1940) in 1888 and they had at least one son: Harold Jack Wilderspin (1889 – 1966). In 1891 they were living at 75 Norwich Street with Martha’s sister Rosamund. Martha died at home aged 39 years old.
Rosamund Sophia Wilderspin (1850- 29 July 1922)
Rosamund was Martha’s elder sister and never married. She worked as a monthly sick nurse, and qualified at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital where she did a three month diploma (April to July 1886). In 1901 she was nursing three week old Elspeth Stevenson at The Poplars, Hills Road. She then moved to Hunstanton where she ran Halfield House Lodging House on Cliff Terrace. By 1920 she had returned to live in Cambridge and was at 24 Devonshire Road with her sister Emma. Rosamund died aged 76 years old.
