Monument

This double sided headstone, with carved detail of flowers and leaves, stands in the parish area of St Pauls roughly 9 rows east along the south path and 2 monuments to the south. The carved inscriptions have suffered some erosion but are mostly still legible. This area is usually left to grow wild and the stone is not always visible.

Gladys Day (1895 – 7 January 1902)
Gladys was the daughter of miller Harry and Maria (née Whiting) Day. She died at Cherry Hinton Road aged 6 years old.
Kathleen (Kath) Hilda Day (1892 – 19 March 1920)
Kath was born in Lowestoft and had moved with her family to Cambridge by the time she was 5 years old. In 1911 was assisting her mother Maria run a Lodging House at 2 Maid’s Causeway. She died at home ‘after a very short illness’ and her funeral took place on 23 March 1920. She was said to have been a member of the St Andrew’s Street Baptist Chapel and a keen member of the De Freville Tennis Club. Her obituary said she was ‘held in the highest esteem’ by all who knew her and ‘a large number of symathisers gathered to pay a last tribute of respect’.
Henry (Harry) Day (5 October 1858 – 27 October 1925)
Harry was born in Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire – the third son of John and Betsy (née Hopkins) Day. His father farmed 100 acres in the village, and Harry trained as a corn miller. He married Maria Whiting on 20 June 1881 at the Sutton Baptist Chapel and the couple had twelve children: Jessie Maria (1881-1963), Alice Evelyn (1884-1972), Frank Willliam (1885-1955), Sidney Arthur (1888-), Christine Louie (1890-1938), Marjorie Emma (1897-1959), Olive Elizabeth (1899-1971), Norah Winifred (1901-1963), Ernest John (1903-1977) and Dorothy (dates unknown). The couple lived in Chatham, Kent when they first married, before moving to live in Lowestoft (at least 1885-1892). By 1895 they had moved to Cambridge and lived at Cherry Hinton Road (1901) and later lived at Maids Causeway. He died aged 66 years old.
Maria Day (née Whiting) (27 February 1861 – 7 February 1947)
Maria was the daughter of Matthew and Hannah (née Hopkins) and was baptised in Sutton, near Ely on 7 April 1861. She grew up in Sutton, where her father farmed 21 acres and married Harry Day when she was 20 years old. She ran a Lodging House at Maids Causeway (1911) and in 1939 was still living there with two of her children.
