Mary Ann Deeks (née Ransom) (1838 – 7 June 1908)
Mary was born in Lidgate, a village between Clare and Newmarket, Suffolk, the daughter of William and Sarah. William Ransom was a blacksmith and she grew up in Stansfield, which is a village between Haverhill and Bury St. Edmunds. In 1861 she was working as a housemaid for Rev. Edward Wilkinson, the vicar of Linton and married Robert Deeks in Linton on 4 February 1864. Robert was a railway guard and the couple had at least three daughters: Rose (1866-), Agnes Lily (1869 – 1958) and Florence Violet (1876-1948). The family lived in Totenham (1871), Bishops Stortford (1881), Argyle Street, Cambridge (1891), 49 Cavendish Road (at least 1895-1901) and 90 Sedgwick Street (at least 1905 onwards).
Agnes Lily Deeks (26 October 1868 – 1 May 1958)
Agnes was born in Tottenham and was baptised on 17 November 1869. She lived with her parents until their deaths. It is thought that she was incapacitated by 1939 and was living at the Doddington County Hospital in 1939. Her death was registered in Kettering, Northamptonshire.
Robert Deeks (1842 – 29 January 1913)
Robert was the son of George (1816-1852) and Susan (née Ward) (1819-1895) Deeks and was born in Poslingford, near Sudbury, Suffolk. He was baptised there on 1 May 1842. His father was an agricultural labourer, who died when Robert was 10 years old. Susan Deeks married farmer Thomas Bareham in 1853 and in 1861 Robert was working as an labourer on his step father’s farm – Crave Farm, Great Chesterford. He later worked for Great Eastern Railway (GER) as a guard and had retired by 1901. He married widow Harriet Stanford (1857-1922) in 1909 and the couple continued to live at Sedgwick Street with his eldest daughter Agnes. Robert died at home aged 70 and his widow placed a notice in the Cambridge Daily News which raread ‘Mrs Deeks and daughters wish to thank all friends for their kind sympathy in their sad bereavement’.
