Monument

The headstone fell some time ago. The grass was cut back to take a photo and then replaced.

Inscription 

In Loving Memory of DAVID DEEKS died Oct 4 1878 aged 37 years

Also SUSANNAH ELIZABETH wife of the above died June 17 1899 aged 55 years

“We love her yet no tongue can tell
[How] much we loved her and  [how well]
Christ loved her too, and thought [it best]
To take her home with Him [to rest].” *

David Deeks (30 June 1839 – 4 October 1878)

David was born in East Dereham and baptised there on 14 July 1939. He was the son of gardener Samuel (1788-1855) and Ann (née Hazel)(1799-1861). Aged 21 David was working as a tailor and living with his widowed mother and sister Jane at Banyard’s Yard, East Dereham. He married Susannah Coville in 1868 and they lived at 37 Eden Street. He died aged 39 years old, although the date on the grave monument reads 37 years.

Susannah Elizabeth Deeks (née Coville) (1842 – 17 June 1899)

Susannah was the daughter of tailor Allen Coville (1813-1854) and Louisa (née Richards) (1813-1907). She grew up at 2 Globe Passage, and aged 18 was working as a stay (corset) maker. After she was widowed she lived at 17 New Square with her niece Emily Deeks, and ran a Lodging House. She died at New Square aged 56 years, although the date on the grave monument reads 55 years.
