Frederick Kimmence Diss (1894 – 23 June 1938)
Frederick was born in Sawston and was the illegitimate son of Frances (Fanny) Diss. Fanny married agricultural labourer Charles Powter in 1897 and Frederick grew up in Babraham with his six step siblings. By the age of 16 he was also working as a farm labourer. He enlisted as a Private with the 11th Suffolk Regiment on 11 September 1914, and was discharged in April 1917 due to receiving a gun shot wound to the skull. He was awarded the silver war badge, which was most frequently awarded to soldiers who were discharged early from the 1st World War.
Frederick married Elizabeth Arnold and they had two daughters: Ellen Margaret Frances (1918-2009) and Jean Laura Doreen (1925-). The family lived at 4 Victoria Road and Frederick died at home aged 44 years old.
Elizabeth Diss (née Arnold) (11 August 1891 – 1 January 1959)
Little is known of Elizabeth’s early life and after being widowed she ran a Lodging House from Victoria Road (1939). She died at 116 Union Lane on New Years Day 1959.
