Inscription
GERTRUDE KEITH DOUGLAS born at Darjeeling (Himalaya) June 27th 1852 died at Cambridge March 3rd 1941
Gertrude Keith Douglas (27 June 1852 – 3 March 1941)
Gertrude was born in Darjeeling and baptised there on 12 July 1852. She was the second of the six children born to Stewart and Catherine (née Wood) Douglas. Stewart was Scottish, and Catherine was Irish and he was an East Indies Merchant. In 1861 Gertrude was living in Southport with her two sisters and governess. By 1891 the Douglas family had returned from India and were living in Knutsford, Cheshire. Gertrude was 38 years old and was living with her parents and younger sister Beatrice Isabella (1861-1947)
In 1901 Gertrude was living in Paignton and working as a hospital nurse in a consumption hospital. By 1911 she was in Sidmouth, Devon and was a nurse to widow Margaret Gardener.
In 1939 she was living at 144 Tension Road with her sister Beatrice, a cook (Emily Mayes) and night attendant (Violet Pont). Beatrice had moved to Cambridgeshire to live with her brother Rev. Evelyn Keith Douglas (1859-1920) who was the Vicar of Cheveley, near Newmarket which is presumably why the sisters had settled at Tenison Road. Gertrude was marked on the records of 1939 as being incapacitated. She died ‘peacefully in her sleep’ at Tenison Road aged 88 years old and was buried at Mil Road Cemetery on 7 March.
