Elizabeth Ford Fewell [nee Gray] (c.1892 – 14 January 1919)

Elizabeth was born in Cambridge and was the daughter of Alfred and Sarah Gray.  Her father was an engine driver, and she was brought up at 60 Argyle Street [1901].  By the age of 19 [1911] she was living in Bedford, and working as a housemaid to a retired army colonel.

She married Ernest Fewell on 22nd April 1916 at St Columba’s Church in Cambridge.  He was home on leave from Flanders.  They married on a Saturday, took a brief honeymoon to Brighton after the marriage, and he returned to the war front on the following Friday.

Elizabeth died in  early 1919 aged 26 years old.  One can only speculate that she was maybe a victim of the Spanish Influenza epidemic at the time.

Ernest John Fewell (c.1886 – 4 November 1964)

Ernest was born in East Dereham, and was the son of Isaac and Jane Fewell. Isaac was a railway porter, and he grew up in East Dereham.  In 1911 he was living at Tuddenham Lodge and working as a chauffeur to Mr W L Boyle, who was the MP for Mid Norfolk.

He enlisted for the War on 2nd November 1914.  His enlistment papers show that he was 5ft 9 1/4 inches tall, with a 36 inch chest. He was widowed soon after the end of the war.

In 1939 hew as living at 55-58 Courtfield Gardens in Kensington, and his occupation is stated as manager of a residential chambers.  He is noted on the census as married, rather than widowed, but no record of a second marriage can be located.
