The Favel headstone in September 2024.

This headstone stands against the west wall opposite the path that runs to the centre circle.  The carved inscription has faded and some of the stone has crumbled so not all of it is legible.

Edward Favell (1787 – 1854)

Edward was baptised on April 5th 1787 at the parish church of Andrew the Great in Cambridge.. He was the son of John & Elizabeth (née Raye) Favell. Edward became a painter, plumber and glazier. His parents had a painting glazing and plumbing business in Petty Curie which his mother ran with Edward after the death of her husband in 1804.
Elizabeth died in 1840 aged 93.. Elizabeth had had 16 children many of whom died as infants. Five sons died while serving in the military. To read about their adventures go to this website https://www.favell.org.uk/napoleon.htm

He married Sarah Raye in January 21st 1817 at Andrew the Great. In 1841 they were living in St Andrew’s St with 2 servants, In 1851 they were in Petty Cury with 2 servants.They had no children.

Edward died at St Andrew’s St. aged 65. His properties were put up for auction – ‘A small farm on Mill Road with a neat house known as “Romsey Cottage” with pleasure grounds, gardens and pasture closes; A valuable freehold estate in Petty Cury in the occupation of Mr Prior fishmonger; …house in Eden St and 4 houses in Prospect Row.
Romsey Cottage later became Romsey House and is located on the corner of Mill Road and Coleridge Road. The farm was probably Polecat farm .

Sarah Favell nèe Raye ( 19th October 1789  – 1862)

Sarah was the eldest daughter of Lucus and Sarah Raye. Lucus was a plumber and glazier . The family were no-conformist and her birth was recorded with 3 of her sisters in Dr Wlliam’s Library. She was baptised into the Church of England at Andrew the Great, as an adult, on October 1st 1841. Two months later her sister Elizabeth was also baptised at Andrew the Great.

Sarah died at 6 Trumpington St aged 73
