This set of kerbstones in the parish area of St Paul lie midway between the west path and the central path towards the north of the parish. The kerbstones and corner posts (with stone balls on top) are mostly intact and the carved inscriptions still legible. The inscriptions for Samuel and Caroline are partially buried but Henry’s which was added to the top of the kerb is still visible apart from the bramble that grows within the kerb set.

“Gone but not Forgotten”
Samuel Charles Fordham (1861 – 24 November 1890)
Samuel Fordham was Caroline Moden’s first husband. He was the eldest son of Charles and Rebecca (née Tingay) and grew up at 6 Mill Lane where his father was a miller’s labourer. In 1881 he was living with his widowed mother and siblings at Mill Lane and working as a journeyman miller. He is believed to have worked in one of the two mills on Mill Lane/Laundress Way. Samuel married Caroline Bell in 1888 and they had one daughter: Daisy Rebecca (1899-1890). Samuel died at 25 Covent Garden aged 29 years old. He died of T.B. and his death certificate stated his occupation as a miller’s engine driver. Despite his young age he had outlived his mother, father and two sisters and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 28 November.
Henry Moden (1863 – 9 August 1937)
Henry was born in Cherry Hinton and baptised there on 12 April 1863. He was the son of John and Sarah (née Freeman) and grew up on the High Street, Cherry Hinton. His father was a railway labourer and aged 18 Henry was working as an agricultural labourer. He enlisted in the army in 1863 and by 1891 was a private with the 12th Royal Lancer Regiment, living at the Cavalry Barracks in Lancashire. He is believed to have left the army by the time he married widow Caroline Fordham (née Bell) in 1893 in Cambridge. Henry worked as a bricklayer’s labourer, Caroline as a shirt ironer and the family lived at 112 York Street (1891) then 11 Great Eastern Street (1911). They had five children: Henry (Harry) (1893-), Ernest Charles (1894-1962), Mabel Victoria (1897-1988), Albert Edward (1901-1948) and George William (1908-1978). Henry died at Mill Road Infirmary aged 74 years old.
Caroline Moden (née Bell) (1866 – 14 October 1928)
Caroline was the daughter of William and Martha (née Freeston) and was baptised at All Saints’ Church on 1 April 1866. William was a tailor and she grew up at 4 Headley’s Court, King Street (1871) then 98 New Street (1881). Caroline worked as a general servant prior to her marriage to Samuel Fordham in 1888. She died at 111 Gwydir Street aged 62 years old and her funeral took place on 17 October 1928.
From parish burial records it is known that Samuel and Caroline’s infant daughter is also buried in the same grave
Daisy Rebecca Fordham (1889-February 1890)
Daisy died aged 8 months old at Covent Garden and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 1 March 1890
