Ernest Robert Free (1888–1918) was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 10th Siege Battery, the Royal Garrison Artillery who fought in the First World War. Shortly after spending leave in Cambridge he travelled to Winchester, Hampshire. He contracted the Spanish ’flu and after a few days’ illness he died in the Magdalene Hospital, Winchester. His body was brought back to Cambridge and buried in Mill Road Cemetery. Ernest is commemorated on the County High School war memorial (now located in Hills Road Sixth Form College) and on the Cambridge Guildhall war memorial.
Ernest Robert Free was the oldest of the four children of Moses and Flora Free.
