Gentle headstone

This headstone (fallen) with kerb stones, in the parish area of St Andrew the Great, is located north of the path leading from the western path to the centre circle. It lies seven rows east of the western path and three monument to the north. The inscription of metal letters is intact and legible. A large bush is now growing within the grave set.

Inscription

‘In loving memory of Julia the beloved wife of Daniel Gentle
who fell asleep  Oct. 26. 1911 aged 54 years’

“And with the morn those angel faces smile,
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile”

‘Also of Daniel Gentle who passed away March 25 1929 aged 71years’

Daniel was born in 1857 in Harlton, Cambridgeshire. He was one of at least eight children born to Daniel Gentle and Elizabeth Gentle (née Frisby). His father was initially an agricultural labourer before becoming a grocer. Daniel senior brought up his family including Daniel junior in Harlton and then in Trumpington. Daniel junior became a carter like his two brothers (Arthur and Samuel). He married Julia Harradine in 1877 in Cambridge. They had nine children: Grace (1879-1955); Lizzie (1880-1950); Rose (1882-1959); Effie (1883-?); Sarah (1885-1958); Samuel (1886-1960); Daniel (1888-1965); Winifred (1894-1968); and Lilian (1896-1980). The family initially remained in Trumpington but eventually moved into Cambridge. They lived at 1 Cockburn Street. Daniel died on 25 March 1929 in the Evelyn Nursing Home, Cambridge.

Julia Gentle (née Harradine) (1856-1911)

Julia was born in 1856 in Trumpington, Cambridge. She was the youngest of at least five children born to Robert Harradine and Eliza Harradine (née Beaumont). Her father was an agricultural labourer. The family lived in Church Street, Trumpington. When Julia was not quite two years old, her father died. Her mother did not remarry and remained living in Trumpington at 12 School Lane before moving back to Church Street and working as a laundress. Julia married Daniel Gentle in 1877 in Cambridge. She died on 26 October 1911 in Cambridge.
