Herbert Taylor (24 March 1876 – 28 August 1958)
Herbert was the third of eleven children born to George and Sarah Taylor. He was baptised in the church of St Andrew the Great, Cambridge on June 24th 1877 and brought up at 3 St Tibbs Row, in the centre of Cambridge. This area was redeveloped in the mid 1970s and is now part of Lion Yard. He became a plumber like his father.
He married Annie Dellar (1874-1913) in 1897 and they had five children, Florence Adelaide (1897), Mabel Maud (1899-1992) Lily Irene (1901-1998) George Lantaff (1904-1951) and Herbert Albert (1907-1925). The family lived in Eden Street, Cambridge, where Florence and Mabel were born, before moving to Fair Street, Cambridge. In 1911 he was working in the Water Works.
Annie died in 1913 and is buried in Fulbourn, Cambridgeshire. In 1939 Herbert was working as an Inspector at the Water Works and living at 31 Victoria Road with his children Lily and George, and Lily’s husband. He was noted as being an ARP warden for the Water Works when the records were taken in September 1939. He was still living at Victoria Road in 1958, and died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Herbert Albert Taylor (1907-1925)
Herbert worked at the Halford Cycle Co, was a keen boy scout and died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital of mastoiditis, aged 18. He was a Patrol Leader of the 22nd Cambridge (Holy Trinity) Boy Scouts, who took part in the funeral service held on 29 October. ‘ A representative party from his troop, under the Scoutmaster, Mr C.J. Walker, headed the cortege to the Church and from there to the Cemetery’. The curate of Holy Trinity lead the service and ‘gave a very impressive address, speaking of the high esteem in which the deceased was held by all the members of his troop…..The Scouts’ flag and the deceased’s cap and badge rested up on the coffin as it was borne into the church’. The Scoutmaster gave a tribute to Herbert: ‘we have all suffered a great loss in the death of our brother Scout, Patrol Leader H. Taylor…..he showed the pluck and courage of a true Scout, gallently holding on until the call came to take his place with those who have ‘gone home’. He was in the troop nearly seven years, and had been a Patrol Leader for two years. We had learned to love him well for his splendid qualities as a Scout’.
George Lantaff Taylor (8 October 1904 – 30 November 1951)
George’s unusual middle name was the name of his maternal grandfather – Lantaff Dellar. He worked as a motor van driver at Messrs. King and Harper who were located at Bridge Street, and in 1939 was living at 31 Victoria Road. He died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital as a result of an accident at his employers. He fell 20 feet down a lift shaft, and a verdict of accidental death was recorded.
NB- Probate records give his date of death as 30 November, although the grave monument reads 20 November.
