This grave was not located during the Cambridge Family History Society Survey

George was born in Cambridge, the son of David and Margaret (née Flack). He grew up at 21 James Street, and his father worked as a cordwainer (shoe maker). He went to school in Church Street, Trumpington, which was run by his uncle William Bridges. He then went to work for another uncle – John Flack who ran a shoemaking business at 9 Bridge Street.

George enrolled as a volunteer in the Eighth Corps and died in Cambridge aged

He was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 21 January 1863 and an estimated 5,000-6,000 people attended. The coffin was carried to Mill Road with members of the Eighth Corpe palying the ‘Dead March’ behind it.  The Cambridge Independent Press reported that ‘the customary military honors were performed by the firing of three volleys over the grave’
