‘In Memory of JOHN GOODLIFFE died April 1 1857. Aged 40 years

Also of CHARLOTTE. Widow of the above. Who died Oc.t 13. 1897.
Aged 87 years.

Also GEORGE & THOMAS sons of the above who died in their infancy.’

John Goodliffe (1817 – 1 April 1857)

John was born in the village of Broughton, six miles north of Huntingdon and was the son of George.  By 1841 he had moved to Cambridge and worked as a butcher before marrying Charlotte Beecher on 31 May 1843 in Hemingford Abbotts. The couple had at least six children: George (1844-1844), Martha (1845-1920), Thomas (1847-1847), John (1848-1881), George (1850-1906) and Walter (1852-1928).  In 1851 the family were living on York Street, where John was employing 1 man and 3 boys in his butchery business. He later moved the business to Sidney Street.

Although the grave monument states that he died on 1 April, it is believed he died on the 31 March. The Cambridge Independent Press reported that he died ‘suddenly’ at King Street (thought to be the location of John’s slaughterhouse) whereas the Cambridge Chronicle and Journal reported he died ‘at his residence Sidney Street’.

Charlotte Goodliffe (née Beecher) (1810 – 18  October 1897)

Charlotte was the daughter of farmer William Beecher and his wife Anne. She was born in Hemingford Abbotts and baptised there on 23 July 1810.  She married John Goodliffe at the same church when she was 33 years old.  After she was widowed she took over the butchery business at 26 Sidney Street and ran it with her son John and daughter Martha (1861/1871).  By 1881 Charlotte had retired to live at 7 Parkside and died at home aged 87 years old.

George Goodliffe (1844-1844)

George was baptised at All Saints’ Church on 17 March 1844 and buried there two days later.

Thomas Goodliffe (1847-1847)

Thomas was baptised at All Saints’ Church on 16 February 1847 and buried there on 24 February.
