The headstone and kerb stones, in the parish area of St Paul are in good order.

Inscription

‘In Loving Memory of our dear son GEORGE ALFRED GREEN who passed peacefully on June 21st 1924 aged 19 years.’

“Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.”

‘Also In Loving Memory of JANE GREEN died Sept 24 1948 aged 70 years.’

Kerb

Also Alfred John Green. Died June 2nd 1949 aged 72.’

George Alfred Green (1905- 21 June 1924)

George Alfred Green

George was the only  son of George and Jane Green and died at the Cross Keys, Saxon Street aged 19 years old.

Jane Green (née Bass) (4 February 1878 – 24 September 1948)

Jane was born in Grantchester and was the daughter of Charles and Sarah Bass. Charles was a coprolite digger/ agricultural labourer and Jane married Alfred Green in 1900. They had two children: Charlotte Frances (1900-1999) and George Alfred. Alfred was a publican when they married and they lived at The Crown, 6 Cross Street (1901). He later worked as a groundsman at Downing college and in 1911 the family were living at 177 Sturton Street. Alfred  then became landlord of the Cross Keys, Saxon Street where the couple lived from at least 1924 onwards.  Jane died at her daughter Charlotte’s house, 44 Selwyn Road aged 70 years old.

Alfred and Jane Green

Alfred was born in Shearness, Kent lived at 5 Brewery Row with his parents John and Charlotte (1881). The family later moved to Great Shelford where John Green ran the Railway Tavern (1891). Alfred died at the Cross Keys aged 72 years old.
