Thomas Gunn (1828 – 1 November 1875)

Thomas was the son of William and Sarah and in 1841 was living with his widowed mother and brother William at 53 Coronation Street. Sarah Gunn was a charwoman and aged 22 Thomas was still living at home and was a railway porter (1851). He married Maria Brown on 8 October 1860 at St. Paul’s Church and they had two daughters: Mary Maria (1862-1905) and Susan Elizabeth (1864-1921). The family lived at 20 Coronation Street (1861) and 32 Hills Road (1871). Thomas died at home and his funeral took place on 4 November 1875.

Maria Gunn (née Brown) (1823 – 14 December 1883)

Maria was born in Wappenham, five miles south west of Towcester and was baptised there on 17 August 1823. She was the daughter of mason William and Martha and grew up in the village.  In 1851 she was working as a servant at 31 Hills Road for Rev. John Scott, the vicar of St. Paul’s Church, before marrying Thomas Gunn in 1860. After she was widowed she continued to live at 32 Hills Road with youngest daughter Susan and was noted on the 1881 census as having ‘investment in house property’. She died at Hills Road and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 18 December 1883.

NB – She was aged 18 when the 1841 census was taken, which would have made her at least 60 years old when she died.
