George Hale (1858 – 30 December 1932)

George was born in Melbourn, the son of John and Mary Ann (née Fairey) Hale. His father was an agricultural labourer when he was a young child, but after Mary’s death he married for a second time and went to live at 1 Saxon Street with second wife Ellen. In 1871 George was living at Saxon Street, and was a schoolboy, by 1881  was still living at home and working as a college servant. George married Emily Toates on 24 September 1885 in Oakington and they had three children: Frederick George (1886-1964), Ada Ellen (1890-1972) and Harold (1893-1942). They lived at Bateman Street and George worked as a college underporter. After Emily’s death in March 1903 he married Maria Marjoram on 6 April 1904 at Llanfair-in-Builth, Breconshire. The couple continued to live at 44 Bateman Street and George died at home aged 74 years old. His funeral took place on 3 January 1933.

Emily Elizabeth Hale (née Toates) (9 July 1864 – 9 March 1903)

Emily was born in Histon and baptised there on 7 August 1864. She was the daughter of labourer Benjamin and Mary Ann (née Diver) and grew up on the High Street in Histon (1871) and then Westwick, near Oakington (1881). She was documented as an out of work servant when the census of 1881 was taken, before marrying George Hale when she was 21 years old. She died at 44 Bateman Street aged 38 years old.

Maria Hale (née Marjoram) (1859 – 17 June 1937)

Maria was born in Hempnall, just south of Norwich and was baptised in Fritton on 31 July 1859. She was the daughter of James and Sarah and grew up in Hempnall where her father was an agricultural labourer. She worked for Rev. Howard and Ellen Crosbie at the Vicarage, Builth from at least 1891 until her marriage to George Hale in 1904. Maria died at 311 Milton Road and was burid at Mill Road Cemetery on 19 June 1937.
