Alice Mary Hall (née Theed) (1861 – 10 November 1916)

Alice was the daughter of William Vipan Theed (1826-1911) and his wife Elizabeth. She was born in Hilton, a village eleven miles north west of Cambridge and baptised there on 7 April 1861. Her father was a gentleman farmer/landowner who owned 290 acres around Hilton. In  1881 the family were living at Barkham Square in Barkham, near Wokingham Berkshire, where Alice and her sisters Florence and Elizabeth were being taught by a governess. Alice later became a governess and in 1891 was working for the Everett family at 45 Lansdowne Road, Bedford. In  1901 she was working at Uppingham School as a housekeeper and married her cousin Herbert Hall on 27 August 1902 at St Peter’s Church, Norbiton, near Kingston on Thames, Surrey. The couple lived at 138 Tenison Road and Herbert worked  as Secretary of the New Theatre.

Alice died at home aged 55 years old. She had been to a meeting at Holy Trinity Church and had returned by bus to Tenison Road.  She fell down on the doorstep of the house, and was carried inside and Dr Lawton called for.  By the time Herbert returned home at 10pm she was unconscious and died a few hours later.  Her funeral took place on 13 November at Mill Road Cemetery – ‘among the wreaths was one from the staff of the New Theatre inscribed ‘with deepest sympathy and sincere regret”.

Florence Theed (1862 – 29 April 1921)

Florence was the youngest child of William and Elizabeth Theed. She was born in Bedfordshire and grew up in Berkshire, and then Hilton House in Hilton. In 1891 she was documented on the census as being a tutor and  lived with her parents at Hilton House, Hilton until they died.  After the death of Alice she moved to live with her cousin Herbert at 138 Tenison Road, where she died aged 58 years old.

Herbert Hall (30 May 1851 – 18 March 1941)

Herbert was the son of William Willson Hall (1813-1892) and Mary Ann (née Hall) (1822-1909). He was born in Landbeach and grew up at the Manor House where his father was a farmer/landowner of 454 acres, employing 20 farm labourers (1861). After his father retired, the family moved to live at Townsend, Waterbeach and 37 year old Herbert was documented as a farmer (1891). After his father’s death in 1892 Herbert moved with his mother and brother William to live at 2 North Terrace. In 1901 he as recorded as being Secretary of the New Theatre and married Alice Theed the following year.

He married for a second time in  1922 to Charlotte Lilian Deck (1879-1933) and then lived alone at 138 Tenison Road. He died at home aged 89 years old.
