Inscription
To the memory of
FRANCES ELLEN HARDY
Born Dec. 24, 1864.
Died Jan. 11, 1891.

“O rest in the Lord”
Frances Ellen Hardy (née Temple) (24 December 1864 – 11 January 1891)
Frances was born in Paddington, the eldest daughter of Robert Temple (1824-1887) and Eveline (née Smith)(1839-1903). Her father was a professor of music despite being blind and she grew up at 31 Carlton Hill, Marylebone. She married Arthur Whitaker Hardy (1861-1939) on 25 August 1889 at All Hallows Church, Tottenham. Arthur was the son of a surgeon and had been born in Durham, when he married Frances he was documented as being a grocer, and was living in Tottenham. The couple moved to Cambridge, where Arthur ran a grocer’s shop at 11 St. Andrew’s Hill. Frances died at home soon after the birth of their son Arthur John Hardy (1891-1956) – she was just 26 years old.

Arthur Hardy remained in Cambridge for some time, but by 1901 had moved to Ilford where he worked as an electrical engineer. He emigrated to Australia in 1908 and died in Victoria in 1939.
In 1901 Frances and Arthur’s son Arthur was being looked after by his maternal grandmother Eveline Temple in Tottenham. He did not emigrate with his father and married Emile Ford in September 1913.

The photo of the grave has been provided by Frances’ descendant SJ, and we are very grateful for her contacting us about this grave which was not found by CFHS during their survey. The photo is thought to have been taken soon after the funeral as a glass immortelle is still in situ. We hope to identify the grave in the Spring of 2024.
