These graves were not found by CFHS during their survey of the Cemetery, and are now believed  unable to be found

 

Ellen Shipp (née Cracknell) (1860 – March 1932)

Ellen was born in West Wratting, a village ten miles south east of Cambridge and baptised there on 14 October 1860. She was the eldest daughter of agricultural labourer Thomas and Agnes (née Daniels). Aged 10 (1871) she was a pupil at the King Street Servants Institute, which trained girls for domestic service. The Institute opened in 1868 and was funded by public donations.

Ellen married Harry Shipp on Christmas Day 1883 at St. Matthew’s Church and they had six children: Harry Thomas (1884-1884), Albert George (1886-1915), Harry James (1888-1888), Harry James (1888-1889), William (1891-1916) and one other child who died as an infant.

Harry worked as labourer (bricklayer’s, brewer’s and general) and the family lived at Abbey Street (at least 1891 onwards). Ellen worked as a charwoman from c.1911 onwards.

Both Harry and Ellen’s sons who survived childhood were killed in the 1st World War.  Albert did not marry and died at Ypres in April 1915. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.  William was married with two children and died in September 1916 aged 25 years old.  He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Ellen died at home aged 72 years old and was buried in the Holy Trinity area of Mill Road Cemetery on 29 March 1932.

 

Harry Ayres Shipp (30 January 1863 – 26 April 1946)

Harry was born in Chesterton, and is believed to have been illegitimate. He married Ellen Cracknell just before his 21st birthday. In 1921 he was working as a builder’s labourer for Burwick and Co Builders of Elm Street. After he was widowed he went to live with his daughter in law Elizabeth and her second husband Edward Leach at 35 Hardwick Street. he died at home aged 83 years and was buried in the Holy Trinity area of Mill Road Cemetery on 30 April. The funeral service was held at St. Mark’s Church, Newnham before interment.

 

Three of Harry and Ellen’s infant sons were buried in the St. Andrew the Less area of the Cemetery

 

Harry Thomas Shipp (c. May 1884 – September 1884)

Harry died aged 3 months old and his funeral was held on 8 September 1884.

 

Harry James Shipp (July 1888 – August 1888)

Harry was baptised at St. Andrew the Less on 27 July and died aged one month at Abbey Street. He was buried in a private funeral on 24 August 1888.

 

Harry James Shipp (c.August 1888 – December 1889)

Harry was baptised at St. Andrew the Less  on 13 Ocrober and died at Abbey Street aged 4 months old. He was buried on 30 December 1889.

 

Ellen and Harry’s grandson William was buried in the St. Mary the Great area of  the Cemetery

 

William Thomas Albert Shipp (29 June 1913 – June 1919)

William was the son of William Shipp (1891-1916) and Elizabeth Margaret (née Shaw) (1891-1987). William was a butcher and the family lived at 11 Gas Lane – they also had an older daughter named  Gertrude Dorothy (1911-1985). William was baptised at St. Matthew’s Church on 10 August 1913 and died at the Sanitorium, Mill Road just before his 6th birthday. He was buried on 18 June.
