Henry John Sargent  (24 September 1870 – 30 January 1941)

Henry was the illegitimate son of Hagar Sargent (1850-1888) and was born in Barrow, a small village eight miles west of Bury St Edmunds. where he was baptised on Christmas Day 1871.  Hagar worked as a tailoress, and Henry was raised by his mother and  grandfather John Sargent. Hagar married James Frost in October 1887 in Barrow, but died less than six months later of heart disease.

By 1891, Henry had moved to Cambridge where he lived at 9 Shelley Row with his uncle and aunt. Aged 20 he was working as a ‘kennel man’. He married Tilly Carter on 5 July 1892 at St. Andrew the Less Church and they had five children: May Blossom (1895-1961), Agatha Lily (1901-1937) and a further three children who died as infants. In 1901 the family were living at 10 Selwyn Terrace, Grantchester where Henry worked as a groom in a livery yard, and Tilly as a laundress. By 1911 they had moved to 109 Castle Street, Huntingdon Road, by which time Henry was working as a cab (carriage) driver. They later moved to 64 South Street (at least 1915 onwards) and Henry worked as a labourer for the Cambridge Corporation, but was unemployed in 1921. He died aged 70 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 3 February 1941.

Matilda Elizabeth Sargent (née Carter) (29 July 1870 – 12 July 1944)

Known as Tilly, she was the daughter of Frederick and Elizabeth Carter, and sister of Martha.  Her father was a printer and she grew up at 15 Mount Pleaseant (1871), 15 Salmon Lane (1881) and 26 Occupation Road (1891). At the time of her marriage Tilly was working as a domestic servant. She worked as a laundress throughout her marriage, and is believed to have worked for Gonville and Caius College.  She died at home aged 73 years old and her funeral was held on 15 July.
