Monument

This headstone is often hidden within brambles 11 rows east of the lodge and close to the south wall in the parish area of St Paul. The recent clearance of the area around the war grave that stands one row to the west has enabled us to photograph it. The carved inscriptions on both sides have suffered some erosion sea the stone leans to one side but is stable.

“I shall be satisfied  when I awaken  with Thy likeness” psalm 17:15

Relationship: Ann & Charles were husband, & wife and daughter in law, Mary Ann – her sister Sarah and Sarah’s husband Joseph.

Ann Southwell (née Beckett) (1811 – October 1863)

Ann was the daughter of Edward and Susanna (née Parry) Beckett and married Charles Southwell on 24 July 1832 in Barnwell.  Charles was a tailor and the couple had at least two children: Charles Thomas (1835-1891) and Alfred Simeon (1840-1889). The family lived at Queen Street and Ann died at home aged 52 years old. Her funeral was held on 21 October 1863.

Charles Southwell (1808 – 8 September 1881)

Charles was the son of Charles and Sarah (née Freestone) Southwell and was baptised at St. Andrew the Great Church on 12 June 1808.  After he was widowed he lived at Queen Street with his son Alfred and daughter in law Mary (1881) and then at Panton Street. Charles died at home aged 73 and an inquest was held into his death at the ‘Old Guinea’, Russell Street. ‘It appeared that the deceased, a retired tailor went out on Thursday morning for his usual walk, and returned about twenty minutes to one, informing his son that he felt very queer. During dinner he fell forward and expired before a doctor arrived. The cause of death being the rupture of the left ventricle of the heart. The jury returned a verdict accordingly’.

Mary Ann Southwell (née Larkin) (1838 – 24 June 1926)

Mary was born in Chesterton, the daughter of Thomas (1797-1838) and Sarah (née Southwell) (1798-1866). She married her cousin Alfred Simeon Southwell on 2 November 1861 in Chesterton. Alfred was master of the British School in Cambridge. British Schools were a movement, which largely appealed to non-conformists – their aim was to put  ‘the facts of Christianity before the children, but withholds the conclusions arising from those facts. It inculcates ‘morality’ according to its own showing, but Christian teaching it excludes’. Alfred died in Hauxton aged 48 years old, and it is not known where he is buried.

After his death Mary lived at 46 Norwich Street (1891/1901),  171 Gwydir Street (1911) and Guest Road.  She died at Guest Road aged 88 years old.

Joseph William Hodgson (1815 – 12 March 1902)

Joseph was the son of Joseph and Jane and was born in London where his father was a silversmith. He was baptised at Christchurch, Newgate Street on 31 December 1815 and also worked as a silversmith. He married Sarah Goats on 23 December 1849 at St Peter Le Poer Church and they had at least one son: Joseph William (1856-1941). It is not known when Sarah died, but Joseph married for a second time on 2 November 1861 to Sarah Larkins in Chesterton.  Joseph had retired by 1871 and he and Sarah were living at 44 Norwich Street. He died at home and his funeral took place on 17 March.

Sarah Hodgson (née Larkin) (24 December 1826 – 9 February 1907)

Sarah was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah and was baptised on 4 February 1827 at the Barnwell Methodist Chapel. In 1851 she was living with her widowed mother and sister Mary Ann at Church Lane, Chesterton and was working as a servant.  She married widower Joseph when she was 34 years old and died at 95 Norwich Street aged 80 years.
