Relationships: Mother, son and daughter in law

Mary Holliday (née Hawes) (1803 – 8 September 1887)

Mary was born in the village of Lexham, to the north of Swaffham in Norfolk and married Isaac Holliday (1804-1848) at St. Andrew the LessCchurch on 2 November 1823. They had at least six children: Mary (1825-1894), John (1828-1893), Edward (1834-1903), Elizabeth (1837-), William (1839-1841) and Isaac (1843-1905). Isaac was a college shoeblack and the family lived at Christ’s Lane. She was widowed in 1848, and then moved to live at Fields Court (1851) where she was in receipt of Parish Relief.  By 1861 she and youngest son Isaac had moved to live at Tibb’s Row, Vicar’s Buildings and she was working as a seamstress. She later lived alone at Tibb’s Row and died at home.  The death certificate recorded the cause of death as ‘senile decay’ and newspapers reported that she died ‘after a short illness…greatly respected’

Isaac Holliday (7 April 1843 – 17 July 1905)

Isaac was baptised on 30 April 1843 at St. Andrew the Great Church and aged 18 was working as an upholsterer and living with his mother at Tibb’s Row. He married Alice Stoakley (1846-1892) in Grantchester on Christmas Eve 1865 and they had at least eight children: Percy (1869-1870), Alice (1871-1872), Hugh Cecil (1871-1955), Florence Mabel (1876-1957), Frederic (1879-), Herbert Sidney (1881-), Grace (1884-1953) and Alice Augusta (1888-1971). The family lived at Victoria Road (1871), 6 Bedford Terrace (1881) and 48 Chesterton Road (1891). Isaac was an upholsterer, but also served as a Lay Clerk (a member of a college choir). He was widowed in the Spring of 1892 and married Eliza McDonald the following year in Cambridge. They lived at 26 Green Street.

Eliza Ann Holliday (née McDonald) (13 November 1850 – 18 March 1942)

Eliza was born in Croydon and baptised at St. James’ Church on 22 December 1850. She was the third daughter of Donald (1811-1868) and Harriett ( née Stock) (1822-1898)  and grew up in Croydon where her father was house painter.  Eliza married widower Isaac Holliday when she was 42 years old and after his death ran a Lodging House from 3 Trumpington Street, assisted by step-daughter Alice (1911). She later lived at 26 Panton Street (at least 1919-1929) and then at 326 Milton Road with stepdaughter Florence Mabel and her husband Frederick Gage (at least 1932 onwards). Florence was a trained nurse, and the couple ran the Firth Nursing Home from the property. Eliza died there aged 91 years old.
