Sarah was the youngest daughter of  Richard (1808-1849) and Maria (1815-) and was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire where Richard worked as an Excise/tax officer. He died when she was an infant and Alice married post office worker James Samuel Ilsley (1847-1908) in Henley, Oxford in 1868.  They had at least three children:  Henry Ormsby (1870-), Alice Beatrice (1872-1950) and Ermine Edith (1875-1942). From at least 1870 to 1883 the family lived in Penzance, and all three children were born in Cornwall.  By 1885 they had moved to live at Mill Road, Cambridge and Alice died at home aged 38 years old. She was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 26  March 1886.

James Ilsley married Georgina Gouldthorpe (1866-1908) in 1887 and they had a further two children: Cecil Maurice James (1888-1940) and Violet Marjorie (1891-1969). By 1891 James and Georgina were living in Heigham, Norfolk where he was engineering inspector for telegraph posts.
