Ellen Ann Kester (née Fuller) (1863 – 18 October 1923)
Ellen was born in Cherry Hinton and baptised there on 2 July 1863. She was the daughter of Reuben and Harriet (née Gillson) and grew up at Fisher’s Lane, Cherry Hinton, where her father was a gardener and groom. In 1891 Ellen was living at 6 Panton Street and working as cook to three sisters – Isabella, Cecilia and Mary Loraine. She married Joseph Kester in 1900 and they lived at 25 Hooper Street. Joseph worked as a cattle stockman (1901) and then as a labourer (1911). Ellen died at home aged 60 years old, although the death registration documentation recorded her age as 56 years, as does the grave monument. She was some years older than her husband, and her age ‘reduced’on documentation after marriage.
Joseph Kester (1871 – 3 October 1932)
Joseph was the son of James and Maria and was born in Swavesey. His father was a farm labourer and he grew up at 56 High Street, Swavesey. Before he married Joseph worked as a milkman and lived at Covent Garden (1899) and then lodged at 94 Russell Street (1901). In September 1899 Joseph and his brother Frank appeared in court charged with ‘assaulting P.C. Robinson whilst in the execution of his duty’. The brothers had been drinking, and had caused a disturbance in French’s Road offering to fight passers by. P.C. Robinson had asked them to leave, which they refused to do. They had also refused to give their names and addresses and both brothers had struck the policeman. At court Joseph claimed he had seen the policeman strike his brother and was just trying to defend his Frank. The brothers were found guilty and fined 10s and 11s, 3d in costs.
After he was widowed Joseph married Jane Waters (1880-1963) in 1925. He died at 5 Clarendon Road aged 61 years old and his funeral took place on 7 October.
