Richard Langford (c.1835 – 13 April 1906)

Richard was born in Hopesay, a small village in the south of Shropshire, near Craven Arms and was baptised there on 8 February 1835. He was the eldest son of  agricultural labourer Jesse Langford (1805-1884) and Sarah Ann (née Bore) (1812-1878). Aged 16 Richard was working as a farm labourer in Wootton, Shropshire before working on the railway (at least 1861 onwards). In 1861 he was lodging in Shrewsbury and married Ann Ellis on 8 May 1865 at St. Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury by which time he was living in Crewe. The couple moved to Cambridge and lived at 17 Norwich Street (at least 1871 onwards).  Richard worked as a railway carriage examiner, and had retired by the time he died in April 1906. The grave monument gives his age as 70 years, but it is thought he was actually 71 years old.

Ann Langford (née Ellis) (1836  –  23 September 1906)

Ann was born in Bishop’s Castle, a market town in the south west of Shropshire, and baptised there on 8 May 1836. She was the daughter of Edward (1800-1875)  and Jane Ellis and her father was an agricultural labourer from Montgomeryshire. Before marrying Richard Langford, she worked as a servant for the Oakley family in Shrewsbury. She died at home a few months after her husband.

(NB- There is some discrepancy about her age. Using Baptism records she was 70 years old, her age was registered as being 69 years when she died)
