This headstone, in the parish area of Holy Trinity, is located five graves north of the south path, just before the bend to the north. It is one of four related family monuments in a row. All four monuments are hidden by ivy.

ISMO ERNEST beloved husband of ADA LAWN.
Died Aug 22nd 1933 aged 64 yeas.

Also ADA ELIZABETH LAWN died Aug 22nd 1944 aged 67 years.
Ernest John Edward Lawn (1869 – 1933)
Ernest was the third child of Samuel and Mary Ann Lawn. He was brought up at 102 East Road where his father worked as a blacksmith.
Ernest and Ada were married on November 23rd 1897 at the Cambridge registry office. His trade at his wedding was given as cycle maker and was probably working with his brother Horace. By 1911 he was working at a garage as a motor engineer. They lived in Wllow Place, Prospect Row
In 1901 Ernest and Ada were assaulted near Fitzroy St when a lad asked for a light. Ernest did not have a match so the lad punched him. We learn from the court case reported in the paper that Ernest only had one eye.
In 1908 Ernest’s sister Alice was murdered at her shop in King St. She is buried with her parents.
When he died he was living at 33 Blossom Street.
Ernest served in the Army service core in 1915
Ada Elizabeth Lawn (née Carter) (1877 – 1944)
Ada was the daughter of Thomas and Charlotte Carter of Melbourn.
On October 30th 1901, when they were living at 2 Garden Cottage,Willow Place”, a son was baptised William Thomas Branch Lawn but he was not living with his parents in 1911. The Chelmsford Chronicle published lists of residents at the Colchester hospital for those with learning difficulties and William’s name appears in 1910,1926,1933 and 1940 In 1945 a man of that name died in Braintree, Essex aged 43.
In 1915 a charge of assault was made against Ada and Ernest over a letter thought to have been sent by Ada to a Mrs Tate’s husband. The judge dismissed the case as it seemed Mrs Tate had exaggerated the argument. The contents of the letter were not read out in court. But from the evidence given by Ernest we find out that 5 soldiers were billeted at their house.
Ada died at 29 Union Lane.
