Monument
This plinth stands in the centre of the parish area of St Edward’s. Roughly 15 rows from west of the central path. It is hidden under a bush. Much of the carved inscription is well preserved but some of the lettering on the bottom their is now covered by soil. The family name was Lawrance but often written as Lawrence in records.

Alice Ann Gillam Lawrance (nee Bell) (25 June 1796 ‒ 25 September 1881)
Alice was the daughter of William and Susannah Bell. She was baptised at St Edwards church on July 17th 1896. He father died when she was 11 and her mother died when she was 14. On August 9th 1819 she married James Lawrance, a cook at Kings College.
James and Alice had at least eight children: Sarah Gillam (1820), Alice Ann (1821-1899), Eliza (1823-1902), James (1825-1989), William Henry (1826-1857), Twins – John Valentine (1829 -1900) and Gifford Webb (1829-1869) and Florence Elizabeth Susan (1833-1915). They raised their family at 5 Kings Lane. Alice was widowed in 1847 and continued to live at Kings Lane (1851/1861/1871/1881) with various of her children and grandchildren. She died in 1881 aged 85 years old.
James Lawrance (1 December 1785 ‒ 16 June 1847)
James was the husband of Alice Ann. He was a cook at Kings College and died aged 63 years old. He was buried St Edward’s churchyard where there is a monument to him which stands next to a monument to Alice’s parents. The year of death inscribed here is wrong.
James L. Lawrance (1825‒1898)
James was the 4th child of James and Alice Lawrance. He followed in his father’s footsteps and was a cook at Kings College. He lived his entire life at King’s Lane, living with his mother and siblings there. He did not marry and died in 1898 aged 73 years old.
William Henry Lawrance (c.1826 – 8 April 1857)
William was the 5th child of James and Alice Lawrance. He became a butcher with his brother Gifford. In 1851 he was living at 11 Wheeler Street with Gifford, and they ran a butchery business on Peas Hill. He died in 1857 aged 31 after ‘a short illness’.
Gifford Webb Lawrance (c.1828– 14 December 1869)
Gifford was the 6th child of Alice and James Lawrance and twin brother of John. He was a butcher, and ran a business with his brother William Henry. In 1851 he was living with William at 11 Wheeler Street, but by 1861 had moved back to live at 5 Kings Lane with his mother and siblings. He died in hospital aged 41 years old, having been hospitalised for the last year of his life.
Eliza Webster (nee Lawrance) (c.1823 – 23 December 1902)
Eliza was the 3rd child of Alice and James Lawrance. She grew up at Kings Lane and married James Webster on 8th September 1846 at St Edward’s Church. In 1851 she was living with James at 22 Pembroke Street, and James was working as a builder.
Eliza and James had at least three children: Alice Mary (1847-1929), Bessie Sarah (1849-1932) and Harris (1851-1933). James became ill in the mid 1850’s he sold up all his building equipment and went into hospital where he died in 1856. By 1861 Eliza and her children returned to live at 5 King’s Lane with her mother and siblings. She became an assistant College cook possibly to her brother who was cook at Kings College later she is listed as housekeeper. She continued to live at King’s Lane until the death of her brother James. On census record she is recorded at Kings Lane in, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891.
In 1871 she is recorded as a governess, so may have done some teaching. In 1901 she was at 2 Lyndewode Road, living with her sister Florence. She died at 2 Lyndewode Road in December 1902 leaving an estate valued at £1,001 14s 8d.
Alice Mary Webster (1847 – 27 April 1929)
Alice was the 1st child of Eliza and James Webster. She was baptised on 17th October 1847. She lived with her mother, grandmother and Uncle James at Kings Lane until the late 1890s, and then moved to 2 Lyndewode Road to live with her mother and Aunt Florence. She never married, and on most census returns does not have an occupation. She is noted as a governess on the 1871 return. In 1911 she was living with Florence, and her sister Bessie at 2 Lyndewode Road together with a domestic servant – all three women living on their own means. She died at Lyndewode Road aged 81 years old, leaving an estate valued at £426.
Muriel Lawrance Webster (25/5/1884 ‒ 10/12/1884)
Muriel was the daughter of Harris and Martha Ellen Webster (née Bacon) she was 6 months old when she died at the family home in St Andrew’s St. Harris was the son of Eliza and James and worked as a clerk.
Florence Elizabeth Susan Lawrance (15/7/1831‒1915)
Florence was the 8th child of Alice & James. She was baptised on November 30th 1831 at St Edward’s church and grew up on King’s Lane. She did not marry. In 1861 and 1871 she was working as a governess.
Bessie Sarah Webster (1849‒1932)
Bessie was the 2nd child of Eliza and James Webster. She died at 2 Lyndewode Road aged 83
