James Herbert Legerton (3 November 1868 – 19 February 1909)
Known as Herbert he was the second son of Samuel Martin Legerton and Emily Ann (née Jarman), and was born in Halstead, where his father was a draper. By the time Herbert was 12 years old the family had moved to live at 18 Market Street, where his father established a thriving draper’s shop.
Herbert was an actor and in 1891 was lodging in St. Pancras, London. He appears to have travelled the country performing in minor repertory theatre role. The Stage gave a glowing review of his performance of Bruno in ‘The Eternal City’ in August 1904 saying that it ‘was a fine piece of work, the lights and shades of the character being finely portrayed’. In August 1905 he played the role of Kato in the Japanese play ‘The Darling of the God’s’ which toured from London to towns including Gloucester. In June 1906 he appeared at the Royal Victoria Pavillion, Ramsage playing a police spy in a production of ‘The Eternal City’. He died at 43 Coram Street, London aged 40 years old.
