The well preserved headstone stands close to the central path, in the parish area of St Mary the Great.
Inscription
Henry List (c.1826 – 18 November 1903)
Henry was the son of tallow chandler John List and his wife Alice. He grew up at Wheeler Street, and then at Terrace Lane. Aged 25 he was working as a clerk, but by 1858 was a wine and spirit merchant. He married Mary Neve at St John the Baptist in Oxford on 23 February 1858. They had ten children: Elizabeth Wallis (1859-1875), Robert (1860-), Alice (1862-1913), Annie (1862-1913), Frederick Henry (1864-1961), Herbert William (1867-1922), Arthur James (1868-1907), Florence Mary (1870-1948), Ernest Richard (1872-1942) and another child who died as an infant.
Henry ran a wine merchants at 3 Market Hill, and by 1881 was living at Halifax Road – in that year he was listed as having no occupation, but later Henry worked for the town council. In November 1884 he was elected by the Market Committee to the role of Inspector of Weights and Measures and Inspector of Explosives. The job involved going out to visit businesses and ensuring their weights were correct. Two days a week were also spent in an office where shop keepers brought their weights to be calibrated. The role later expanded to include being Clerk of the Markets. Henry worked in the role until his death, and died at Halifax Road aged 77 years old.
Mary List (née Neve) (c.1829 – 11 May 1920)
Mary was born in Cambridge and was the daughter of Charles and Ann Neve and sister of Alfred Neve. Her father was a publican, who later worked as a college clerk at King’s College. She married Henry List when she was 25 years old. After she was widowed she lived at 73 Oxford Street (1911) with her children Alice, Florence and Ernest and died aged 90 years old.
Elizabeth Wallis List (1859 – 6 April 1875)
Elizabeth was the eldest child of Henry and Mary List. She was baptised at St Mary the Great Church on 21 March 1859, and died at 3 Market Hill aged 16 years old.
