Mary Ann Neve (née Howes) (1833 – 2 April 1873)
Mary was born in West Somerton in Norfolk – a village nine miles north of Great Yarmouth. She was the daughter of George and Sophia Howes and was baptised on 1 December 1833. Her father was a wheelwright and she grew up in the village with her six siblings.
She married Alfred Neve on 25 January 1858 at St Andrew the Great Church. Alfred worked as an ironmonger’s assistant and Mary as a milliner. Alfred and Mary had at least eight children: Arthur (1858-1941), Kate (1860-1924), Edwin (1862-1876), Jane (1863-1943), Ellen (1865-1944), Oliver James (1866-1932), Ada (1868-1893) and Maud (1870-1942). They lived at 22 Earl Street and Mary died there aged 39 years old.
Alfred Neve (c.1833 – 4 October 1876)
Alfred was the son of Charles and Mary Neve and brother of Mary. His father was a publican and later a college clerk at King’s College. Alfred grew up at Queen’s Lane, 2 Parker Street and then 9 Earl Street. He married Mary Howes when he was c.24 years old.
In December 1860 Alfred was declared bankrupt. He was required to pay £8 per year by quarterly instalments for the next six years. He died at Earl Street aged 43 years old.
Edwin Neve (c.1862 – 30 December 1876)
Edwin was baptised at St Andrew the Great on 5 January 1862. He died aged 15 years old.
Alfred and Mary’s orphaned children were dispersed. Youngest daughter Maud went to the Cottage Orphan Home in Fitzwilliam Terrace and Ada went to the Wolverhampton Orphan Asylum at Goldthorn Hill. Most of the girls later went into service. Oliver was ten years old when his father died and appears to have been adopted by his uncle and aunt and later took their name of Hammond.
