Marjorie Mabel Robertson (née Grove) (1883 – 5 February 1929)

Known as Mabel, she was the eldest  of thirteen children born to carpenter Walter Grove and Alice (née Hall). She was born in Guildford and baptised there on 15 June 1884. She married John ‘Jack’ Northern Robertson  on 2 December 1911 at St. Mary’s Church, Send (near Guildford). At the time of the marriage Jack was living in Send, and working as a secretary for a public company.

They had at least five children: Leonard Northern (1914-1914), Marjorie Joan (known as Joan) (1915-), Lance-Corporal Peter Ian Northern (1917-1942),  Madelaine Ray (1920-1942) and Mymosa Anne Piccaver (1925-2011). Leonard, Joan and Peter were born in Winchester, Madelaine in Sussex, but by at least 1925 the family had moved to live at  St. Alban’s, 145 Cherry Hinton Road. Mabel died at home and her funeral was held at St. John’s Church, Hills Road. Jack left a wreath at the graveside which read ‘to a devoted wife and perfect mother’.

Madelaine Ray Robertson (16 April 1920 – 23 May 1942)

Madelaine was born in Stoughton, Sussex and baptised there on 23 May 1920.  She worked as a children’s nurse and died in the Leys Annex of Addenbrooke’s Hospital ‘after a long illness patiently borne’ aged 22 years old. Her funeral was held at Emmanuel Church, Trumpington on 26 May.

At the time of her death her brother Peter was being held as a prisoner of war in Malaysia by the Japanese.  He was declared dead in October 1942.

John Northern Robertson (20 May 1885 – 11 November 1946)

Jack was the son of Henry (1848-1916) and Anna Elizabeth (née Piccaver) (1853-1894). He was born in Bladon, Oxfordshire and baptised there on 19 April 1885. His father was Scottish and worked as a gamekeeper.

After he was widowed he married widow Nell King (née Ayliffe) (1890-) in 1934 and they continued to live at 145 Cherry Hinton Road.  In 1939 he was documented as being an out of work food sales rep.  Jack died aged 62 years old at Chesterton Infirmary and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 14 November 1946.
