Maud Mary Reeves (née Smith) (1897 – 13 July 1925)

Maud was the daughter of Frank Smith and was born in Cambridge. She was raised by her aunt Sarah Elbourne at Stockwell Street (1911) and married Lance Corporal Basil Augustus Reeves (1896 – 1977) on 18 October 1918 at St. Phillip’s Church.  Basil returned from the front to get married, and also threw himself back into the Salvation Army, where he was a Bandsman, and later Captain.

The couple had two children: Sergt Kenneth Basil (1921-1944) and Gordon Hugh Haggerston (1923-2004). Kenneth was born in Cheshire and Gordon in Hackney.  In 1921 Basil was a full time Salvation Army Officer posted in Cheshire.  Maud died at Brightlingsea, Essex aged 28 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 19 July in what newspapers described as ‘impressive and moving scenes’

Staff-Captain Olive Booth, daughter of General Booth officiated at the funeral, which started from 207 Mill Road, and then at the Citadel, Tenison Road. ‘As the coffin, which was covered with beautiful flowers and the deceased’s officer’s Bible and bonnet entered the Citadel, the band…played ‘Promoted to Glory’ after which Staff-Captain Olive Booth and Sergt-Major Endersby paid warm tributes to the deceased officer’s disposition and sterling qualities and to the patience and fortitude with which she had borne her illness’. Interment was then made ‘in a new family grave’ in the Mary the Great area of Mill Road Cemetery.

Basil Reeves married fellow Salvation Army worker Captain Edith Anderson in 1926. They went to live in Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire where he ran a grocery shop.
