John Mean (1840 – 12 November 1905)

John was the son of John and Maria (née Petty) Mean and was born in Sawston. His father was a baker, who had a shop on Sawston High Street and John also worked as a baker.  He married Bertha Robinson (1847-1880) on 24 June 1868 at St. Mary’s Church, Haggerston and they had at least five children:  John (Jack) (1870-1906), Richard William (1872-1962), Tom Owen (1874-), Fred Ernest (1876-) and Rosalie Edith (1878-1884). John took over his father’s business and the all the children were born in Sawston.  Bertha died in May 1880 and although John stayed in Sawston for some time by 1891 he had moved to 13 Bradmore Street where he ran a bakery helped by sons Jack and Richard. He retired to live at 2 Fitzroy Street (at least 1901 onwards) and died at home in 1905.

John (Jack) Mean (1870 – 30 November 1906)

Jack was the eldest son of John and Bertha and worked as a baker. He is thought to have emigrated to Canada in the 1890’s although no emigration/immigration documentation has been able to be found. He died at Cranbrook, British Colombia aged 36 years old and was buried in Canada.
