Samuel Stubbings Metcalfe (1843 – 1885)

Samuel was the son of Samuel Stubbings Metcalfe and his wife Hannah. He was baptised on 4 April 1843 and grew up on Castle Street.  Samuel (Snr) was a compositor and Hannah worked as a college bedmaker In 1861 Samuel was working as a baker, but was a college servant by 1871. He married dressmaker Susannah Flack (1835 – 1908)  at All saint’s Church on August 6th 1878,  his occupation was given as cook. The couple lived at 23 Sussex Street with his mother Hannah (1881). Samuel died aged 42 years old.

His widow ran a lodging house from 23 Sussex Street (1891) and later at 13 St. John’s Street (1901). She died in June 1908 aged 73 and is also buried in this parish.

His mother died in 1891 aged 71 and is also buried in this parish.

It is thought that his father died in 1875 aged 56 and was buried in Chesterton but we have found no burial record.
